STEAM RISING THROUGH BLOW HOLES

MOUNTAINTOP TREELINE

Traveling south this morning, we saw many places where steam was being emitted through broken holes in the earth’s surface.  Much of the electricity in the area is generated from the steam from below the earth’s surface.  The first stop was at Huka Falls.  The water color is a beautiful aqua-marine shade of blue.  We stopped in Taupo for morning tea.  Lake Taupo is 506 square kilometers.  The lake was created by a volcanic crater, supposedly extinct.  We made a photo stop for pictures of Mount Ruapehu, the only active volcano.   The inactive volcano is Mount Whakappa.  As we traveled through many small towns on our way to Wellington, we observed the price of petrol to be $2.15 per liter (a liter being almost equal to a quart).  Again, we are staying in a Mercure Hotel.  The accommodations are definitely very nice.
